Taking a cruise is a unique way to travel, in which you can go to many different places without ever changing rooms. With so many climates and events to experience, it can be a bit challenging to plan for a cruise. So we asked Kari Tarnowki, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Regent Seven Seas Cruises, what factors travelers should consider before embarking on a cruise.
1. What kind of clothes are appropriate for a cruise? Do men need tuxedos? Do women need gowns?
Elegant or resort casual is what I would deem best. Comfort is always the No. 1 factor on a vacation, so pack nice resort wear or smart casual clothing. Obviously, the climate or region will dictate whether you pack light clothing such as shorts, or heavier items or clothing that can be layered.
When cruising in Alaska or Northern European climates, where weather can sometimes be cooler or damp, pack items that can be layered for warmth and dryness, but also for versatility. Mornings can start out cool and damp but become warm and dry by noon. So for this, versatility is key.
In the evenings onboard ship, nice slacks and a shirt—possibly a sport jacket or suit with no tie—are perfect for men. Women will do well with dressy pants, a suit, a skirt and a top or slacks—and a blouse or even a nice sundress.
2. What is your No. 1 packing tip for cruise travel?
Lay all your clothing out before putting it into suitcases and then eliminate 1/3 of it. The ships have launderettes as well as laundry services in case you need anything laundered, pressed or freshened up. Resist the temptation to overpack.
3. How much luggage can I bring on the cruise? Are there limits like on the airlines?
Any reasonable amount is welcome, the airlines however, may disagree.
4. Is there a particular type of luggage (rolling suitcase, duffel, etc.) that is best suited for cruise travel?
Especially for international travel, I prefer anything that is on wheels. I especially like sets that can stack or nest.
5. Aside from price, what other things should be considered when choosing a specific cruise?
Destinations are always a major focus. Pick itineraries that include all the iconic, must-see destinations you want to experience but also make sure that some smaller, off- the- beaten- path ones are included. This makes for a more restful, relaxing experience and also affords you the opportunity to experience some surprises.
Also, don’t buy on price alone , look at the true value.
6. Once the cruise is underway, are there any extra or ”h idden “ charges I need to plan for?
Not on Regent—the only extras are shopping and the Canyon Ranch Spa.
7. How much cash should I bring and how do I pay for things once the cruise is underway?
You will not need cash for anything onboard, but you will need U.S. dollars or local currency ashore. Almost all establishments in the destinations we visit accept major credit cards.
8. Is purchasing travel insurance a good idea?
Absolutely— you would never drive your car without insurance . Why would you travel without it?
9. What types of passports, visas and other documentation do I require?
Regent Seven Seas Cruises require passports for ALL travelers for all voyages, regardless of guests’ nationality, ports of call and countries visited.
Visa requirements must be verified and obtained approximately 90 days prior to sailing. Required visas by cruise may be found at www.zvs.com/rssc. Blanket visas through RSSC cover only our shore excursions, not trips that passengers decide to do by themselves.
